Headless

[198 words]

‘Headless!’ they shout, as they point and they jeer.
(The teasing increases at this time of year.)
I’m supposed to be scary but know that I’m not.
I’ve never caused nightmares but know that I ought.

It’s tough to be spooky without glowing eyes,
or big hairy ears to cause terrified cries.
No razor-sharp fangs or a bumpy old nose--
with no face there’s no place to host any of those.

But THIS year is different—I’ll find me a head
that’s sure to unnerve both the living and dead!
I’ll plop it on top and I’ll scare with the rest.
I’m done being headless, unhappy and stressed.

The Noggin Emporium—that’s where I’ll start!
It’s sure to have plenty of my missing part.
There’s rows upon rows from the dearly deceased,
pillaged from graves from the north, south and east.

Yet none fit quite right on these shoulders of mine.
Something is missing—it’s hard to define.
I suspect what I need is not tucked on a shelf.
I realize now it resides in myself.

My soul is what makes me stand out in a crowd.
“I’m headless!” I shout to them. “Headless and proud!”
